Ready to hit the climbing wall but feeling a little nervous? 🧗‍♀️ You’re not alone! Fear of heights and not knowing how to fall safely can be the top worries for beginners. In this guide, you’ll learn simple, step-by-step techniques to fall safely, build confidence, and enjoy every climb—so you can crush your first routes without stress or injury.
These tips are for boulderers: First, practice falling in a controlled, safe manner. Once you’ve got that down, you can handle unexpected slips with confidence. I’ve included a sketch for you—try it a few times to get the feel. But remember, no matter how you fall, remember to never catch yourself with your hands! Think about turtles, be one, be a turtle who is swinging on its back!
- Look down your feet, drop down
- Think about your heels, more weight on them
- When impact with the mat, roll back
You will see that some pro climbers jump straight down from the top, skipping the roll—for them that’s okay! Personally, I roll whenever needed to reduce the risk of injuries. After my back surgery, being extra careful is a must, and it really pays off in the long run. 💪 And for you at the beginning, when your body is just adapting new things, being mindful of these things is essential!
Facing the Fear of Heights
It’s completely normal to feel afraid. If you only climb halfway up during your first sessions, that’s perfectly fine. Take your time—fear usually eases as you gain confidence and learn to fall safely. If your climbing gym have traverse routes (going horizontally on the wall) maybe try those first, you wont be high!
Tips:
✅ Keep your eyes on the wall, your hands and where you place your feet– Avoid looking down; the mats will always be beneath you.
✅ Practice down climbing – Climbing down (at least half way) carefully builds control and confidence. Check before starting a route, how it is possible to climb down.
✅ Focus on “one more hold” – Don’t worry about being meters up; take it hold by hold.
✅ Trust the mats – They’re pretty soft and designed to keep you safe.
✅ Place your feet carefully – Footwork is crucial in early practice.
Help moves with your core and feet.
✅ Progress gradually – Try climbing slightly higher each session; your brain will learn it’s safe.
✅ Be kind to yourself – Don’t push too hard; steady progress wins.
✅ Record your climbs – Seeing yourself from a different angle can boost confidence. 🎥
Final Thoughts
By practicing safe falling and gradually challenging your fear of heights, you’ll gain confidence, reduce fear, and enjoy climbing more fully. Every small step counts—celebrate each progress! 🎉
